Greystone Sauvignon Blanc 2008 Classic Waipara Valley Sauvignon Blanc. Less overt green grassiness and a broader mid-palate. Ripe gooseberries on the nose, offset by steely minerality on the palate. Hints of broom flower, cut dried grass and limes. Again it has this wonderful stony quality, perfect for a picnic on a hot summer’s day on a North Canterbury river bed. Viticulturist's Notes:North-South facing row orientation on wind-blown loess over clay. These flat blocks lie above the Omihi Stream with a vine density of 2500 vines/Ha on VSP two cane trellis. Winemaker's Notes:Both Sauvignon Blanc blocks were harvested together in cool conditions at optimum ripeness. Different batches in the vineyard provided a full range of varietal characters. Free Run and Pressings were treated separately before blending for fermentation which was carried out under cool conditions to encourage aromatic development until the wine was dry. Greystone Dry Riesling 2009 Lovely juice lime marmalade nose.Funked up on the mid-palate with passion of the flower variety. Aria’s arrival created extended skin contact resulting in a lovely phenolic characteristic in the mid-palate and finishing with complexity and length.Viticulturist's Notes:A sheltered block away from strong winds and frost risk. This block is on clay soils over limestone deposits, which release enough water for steady vine growth but prevent the vines from becoming overly vigorous. Winemaker's Notes:Only Free Run juice from healthy and ripe bunches was used for this batch of Dry Riesling. The juice was drained pre-pressing straight to tank for clarification before being inoculated for fermentation in stainless steel. A neutral yeast strain was used to allow this pristine juice to express itself. Greystone Pinot Gris 2008 Bob Campbell's Pinot Gris of the Year, North & South Magazine December 2009 Finalist, Pinot Gris of the Year Winestate Magazine Annual Issue 2009/2010 Best of Michael Cooper's New Release Winestate Magazine Annual Issue 2009/2010Loads of stonefruit on the nose with hints of gris spiciness. Think grilled summer peaches sprinkled with cinnamon and a hint of vanilla bean. The spicy honeyed characteristic is carried over to the palate which has the trademark viscous mid-palate weight. It deceives with the sensation of sweetness, yet actually finishes quite dry. Perfect wine for food that demands palate weight painted with a light aromatic brush. 6 g/l residual. Viticulturist's Notes:Gentle slopes, NW facing on wind blown loess (silt) over clay. Limestone deposits through vineyard. Density 2500 vines/Ha on VSP trellis. Some dense patches of soil providing texture to the wines. Winemaker's Notes:Varietal flavours were accumulated through hang time on the vines well into Autumn. Unripe bunches were removed prior to harvesting, leaving ripe bunches only for harvesting during the cool night temperatures. Free Run and Pressing fractions were settled separately before blending and fermentation. Fermentation was under cool conditions to enhance the Pinot Gris aromatics. This wine was left to find its natural balance - slightly drier than our 2007 Pinot Gris due to lower harvest sugar levels – a result of the slightly cooler weather over the 2008 harvest. Extended on time on lees and lees stirring has provided texture through the palate whilst keeping this balance. Greystone Pinot Gris 2009 Trophy: Champion Pinot Gris NZ International Wine Show Gold Medal- International Aromatic Competition Highly Commended 2010- Sydney International Wine CompetitionFragrant lemon verbena, orange blossom and lychees on the nose leading you down the path towards brioche and rock melon sprinkled with nuances of spice.Another classic Greystone Pinot Gris, lovely textural wine filled with ripe nectarine, pineapple and dried fruit characteristics. Mid-palate viscosity cleaned up by long linear whack of acid, finishes dry and leaves you wanting more! Perfect wine for food that demands palate weight painted with a light aromatic brush. Viticulturist's Notes:An excellent growing season in Waipara with warm daytime temperatures and good rainfall over February and March which aided the health of the vines canopy and therefore assisted with the ripening process, giving us lovely fruit flavours in the vineyard. Winemaker's Notes:The fruit looked fantastic coming into the winery; lovely dark Pinot Gris grapes with masses of flavour and perfect sugar and acid levels to make a luscious, concentrated yet varietal Pinot Gris. After a gentle pressing the juice was settled clear before a three month fermentation at cool temperatures over Winter. The wine was filtered soon after fermentation for bottling. Greystone Riesling 2008 Gold Medal- New Zealand International Wine Show 2009 Best of Regional New Zealand Winestate Magazine Annual 2009/2010 Best of Michael Cooper's 2009 Release Winestate Magazine Annual 2009/2010 A wine designed to showcase a style the Waipara Valley is becoming famous for. Lovely aromatic profile and brilliance from low pH levels and high limestone slopes. Lots of orange and lime blossom on the nose, fresh lime juice and hints of ginger and star-anise on the palate. Rather than dictating the final sugar levels in the wine before fermentation, the Greystone Riesling is left to find it’s own balance in any given year. We are looking for a subtle interplay between fruit sweetness and acid profile. In 2008 we felt this balanced was achieved at 28g/l residual. Viticulturist's Notes:From two high altitude blocks with some steep sections on a North-South row orientation. The shallow wind blown loess over calcium derived soil results in low vigour vines and fruit with excellent concentration. Winemaker's Notes:Free Run and Pressings were treated separately before blending for fermentation. Inoculated with aromatic yeast and fermented cool until balance between high natural sugars and acids was achieved at a medium style. The fermented wine was given extended time on lees to develop good mouthfeel, to settle naturally and for flavour integration before bottling in September. Greystone Rose 2009 Wonderfully lifted nose– hints of cut hay and late summer musk roses in full bloom.Warm natural fermentation and lees ageing creates palate weight and texture with flavours reminiscent of sun ripened nectarines and peaches. Lovely long spicy finish. The wine to be plonked on a long table under big trees on days when time is not important.Viticulturist's Notes:Our Rosé was taken from our North West facing ‘Block 5’ Pinot Noir in 2009. This block enjoys temperature fluctuations from day to night that are perfect for retaining fruit flavours with real depth. The fruit ripening was very even and consistent across our Pinot Noir resulting in great fruit richness and ripe berry flavours. Density 2500 vines/Ha on VSP two cane trellis.Winemaker's Notes: We picked our Pinot Noir for Rosé at optimum ripeness when bunches were fully ripe and showing wonderful berry fruit flavours. After a short period soaking on skins we transferred the juice to tank for fermentation. Greystone Pinot Noir 2008 Elite Gold Medal: Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2009A complex array of sweet berry fruit with hints of cloves and spice on the nose. The palate has a luscious full-bodied entry with smooth integrated tannins which give way to a lingering finish of fresh juicy acidity. Flavours of wild blackberry and ripe raspberries combined with an earthiness and mild spice.A symbiotic match for local lean lamb, this wine is showing beautifully now but will continue to reveal new layers over the next three years.Viticulturist's Notes:Three North-West facing blocks on Greystone Vineyard.
