Greystone Launches North Canterbury-inspired Wine

We are thrilled to announce the release of our new North Canterbury-inspired wine, Nor’Wester by Greystone.

“As demand grows beyond our vineyard’s production size, we decided to make a wine curated from a selection of the finest Pinot Noir grapes we could find across North Canterbury. An approach which is inspired by the tradition of Negociant houses of Burgundy,” said Dom Maxwell, Winemaker of Greystone Wines.

“We found three vineyards that offered incredibly high quality with a variety of soil types. We think showcasing a blend of these highlights the best of North Canterbury Pinot Noir, while still meeting the Greystone standard of uncompromising quality.”

Nor’Wester by Greystone is named after one of New Zealand’s most notorious gales. Born in the heart of the Southern Alps, the wind accelerates down the valleys east of the Main Divide and roars out across the Canterbury plains. This hot and dry wind has formed a unique terroir in the Waipara Valley over millennia, a terroir Greystone strives to capture with this wine.

“The wind helps protect against disease pressure in the vineyards,” says Nick Gill, Head Viticulturist and General Manager.” It’s a mixed blessing for the growers as it also dries the vines and leaves us with smaller berries with thicker skins- great for concentration in the final wine. So for fans who love a richer style of Pinot Noir it’s a great thing.”

Greystone Winemaker, Dom Maxwell, adds “We believe we have made the quintessential North Canterbury Pinot Noir. It has a powerful, savoury palate of soft dry tannins, integrated with rich plum and raisin fruit flavours and a long and lingering mouthfeel.”
