Greystone Erin's Reserve Chardonnay 2013

Golden straw in colour with flourishes of pastry, vanilla, cream, white peach and baking spices on the nose.  The palate is rich, full bodied with fresh fruit-laden natural acidity. The palate is concentrated and long with peach, rock-melon, dragonfruit and pawpaw. This is a beautifully textural and substantial wine. A pure and true expression of one limestone block high on the Greystone Vineyard.

"Predictably classy flagship Chardonnay from a top producer. Integrated flavours make it hard to describe individual characters but I noted grapefruit, toast, hazelnut and brioche. More nuances will emerge as the wine gains bottle age. It has a very refined, almost ethereal texture and a great balance of alcohol sweetness and juicy acidity so that neither are obvious. Power delivered with subtlety." Drink 2015 -2022.

"Greystone views Chardonnay as 'the finest white wine variety'. The third 2013 vintage (5*) is exceptionally rare – just 73 cases were produced. Grown on steep, north-facing limestone slopes, it was hand-picked at 24.6 brix, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and matured for 15 months in French oak casks (65 per cent new). Bright, light lemon/green, it is very rich and harmonious, with highly concentrated, citrusy, peachy flavours, mealy and biscuity notes adding complexity, and a well-rounded, lasting finish. A very generous wine, it has lapped up the new oak effortlessly, offering top-flight drinking from now onwards."

The nose is very full and powerful with deep and densely concentrated aromas of white stonefruits and citrus fruits melded with waves of creamy and nutty barrel-ferment notes, mealy and flinty layers, flint, smoke and toasty oak. Full-bodied, the palate is fulsome and rich with powerfully concentrated and deeply packed flavours of sweetly ripe citrus fruit and yellow stonefruit harmoniously entwined with mealy and nutty oak notes, flint and toasty oak detail. This is wonderfully integrated and complete on palate, the wine flowing smoothly with power and presence. The fruit is underlined by fresh acidity, lending drive and poise, and carries to a very long, creamy, lingering finish with nutty and toasty elements. Match with roast pork over the next 5-6+ years. Hand-picked Mendoza clone fruit from the steepest block on shallow limestone-rich soils with a north-west aspect, the free-run juice indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 15 months in 65% new oak with practically full MLF. 73 cases made.
